Is Your Class Up to the Challenge?

George has been standing proudly on his pedestal, tri-cornered hat in hand, for a very long time. Over the years he's seen it all on the Campus Green–frisbee games, classes under the trees and, oh yes, even the midnight scenes on May Day! While George still feels "all right," just like the rest of us, he has watched those memories begin to fade over the years.

To help remind him of the good old days, George is rallying you and your reunion class to post photos of your college years to the Alumni Facebook Page! George is challenging the following eight classes–2007, 2002, 1997, 1992, 1982, 1977, 1972 and 1967–to see which class can post the most photos of their time at WC.

Get set to dust off the old scanner or search through your data files; post your photos to the Alumni Facebook Page through February 29. (Please keep the photos PG-rated and make certain to add your class year to the photo description in order for it to count.) Fear not! Photos that have already been sent in through your reunion committee will count towards your total.

What's in it for you? The class with the most photos posted to the page by midnight on February 29, 2012, will win a free round of drinks at their Friday night reunion class party on Alumni Weekend! That's right. Free drinks on George! Huzzah to that!

What We Learned from the Reunion Survey

This fall, 837 alumni, faculty and staff shared their thoughts about the possibility of separating Reunion from Commencement Weekend. The Reunion Task Force, composed of alumni and staff, was led by the co-chairs of the Classes & Reunion Committee of the Alumni Board, Peter Shafer ’86 and Heather Spurrier ’00. The task force researched the topic and recently presented the executive summary of their findings to President Reiss. In the new year, be on the lookout for an announcement about Alumni Weekend 2013.

Town and College Announce Agreement on Armory

The Town of Chestertown and Washington College have announced an agreement that will, if fully realized, transfer ownership of the Chestertown Armory to the College. President Reiss stated, “We look forward to working with the Town as we go forward with plans to build a state-of-the art waterfront campus — plans that will incorporate the historic Armory property and be a point of pride for Washington College and the entire Chestertown community." Flock to a WC Chapter Event in Your Area

You don't need to return to campus to feel part of the WC flock! Alumni are networking in Baltimore, meeting up with old friends in Chestertown, and celebrating the holidays together in big cities. If you haven't attended a WC chapter event lately, consider leaving your nest to say "hello" to old friends. Even Gus, though he prefers the comforts of Chestertown, flies off-campus occasionally! Recently, the Talbot Chapter invited Gus to meet some fine, feathered friends at the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, MD. His next stop? Wilmington's toast!

WC Names New Vice President for Advancement

Gretchen Dwyer, a fundraiser and 16-year veteran of development andalumni-relations work, has accepted the position of Vice President for College Advancement and Alumni Relations. A native of California, Gretchen earned a bachelor’s degree in English and African Studies from St.Lawrence University in Canton, NY, and a master’s degree in literacy, language and cultural studies from Boston University. Gretchen, her husband, Tom, and their three children will arrive in Chestertown in December. Read more...

Veterans Deserve a Chance to be Rhodes Scholars

In The Chronicle of Higher Education, President Reiss makes the case that the Rhodes Scholarship should eliminate discrimination on the basis of age. He explains that this award, which has been sending Americans to the University of Oxford for over a century, should provide veterans a chance to be Rhodes Scholars. New Members Join WC Alumni Board

The Alumni Board welcomed its newest members in October: Elizabeth O'Hara Lazo '93, Wayles Wilson '03, Bruce Alexander '94 M'00 and Richard Grieves '83. It was the first meeting of the academic year for the Alumni Board. All committees reported on their progress and reviewed goals for the year. Afterwards, a reception at the Alumni House was held for the board, and a feathery VIP guest officially welcomed the new board members.

Washington College Freshmen Dig the Pig

Named after Alexander Hamilton (the first United States Secretary of the Treasury and a loyal supporter of George Washington), Hamilton Pig - or "Ham" for short - is a piggy bank symbolizing the importance of giving back to WC. Each freshman received a Hamilton to feed with change. Occasionally, students bring their pigs to events, donating their savings to The Washington Fund while having a “squealing” good time! How We Make the World a Better Place

Recently, we asked alumni to share how they make a difference. You’ll find their thoughtful responses here and on pages 16 and 17 of the Winter 2011 edition of the Washington College Magazine. We encourage you to comment and to continue to share your stories about how you improve the world.

I volunteer with Operation Ava, Philadelphia’s Downtown No-Kill Rescue, Adoption and Education Center. My involvement with Operation Ava began innocently enough—standing in a storefront window, fawning over the small dog on the other side of the glass. This dog couldn’t have been less interested in any of the numerous Philadelphians who took an interest in him. An older dog, he was aloof in every sense of the word. It was then that I knew he was the dog for me. Two days later, we adopted Tilt.

However I couldn’t shake the idea that there were many other dogs like Tilt who deserved a warm and loving home, so I began volunteering with Operation Ava’s Mentor Program. It’s as simple as visiting their Save-A-Life Center to walk dogs, playing with them in the backyard and feeding them treats to positively reinforce their good behavior. It’s our hope that through this informal training, the animals will react favorably when potential families approach their rooms. Tilt is now a spoiled little boy, and we’re beginning to think about our next adoption from Operation Ava. I volunteer for an organization called Three Square in Las Vegas, NV. Three Square is a food bank which provides food assistance to the residents of Southern Nevada. I usually assist with their "BackPack for Kids" program, which provides a bag of nutritious food each week to children who lack adequate food over the weekend. Three Square works in partnership with Clark County School District on this project. During the school year, we pack anywhere from 1,200 to 2,000 bags per volunteer shift.

I volunteer with the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy translating for the Hispanic Community. Most recently I reached out to the Hispanic population to gather their ideas and input for the Easton Point Community Project. The project is designed to get the community involved in planning an 11-acre green space in the Easton area.

I’ve been a volunteer for Maryland Ducks Unlimited for the last 15 years. I have served as chairman of the Central MD Chapter, Zone 8 and publisher of the State Newsletter. We have been a Top 100 chapter out of some 3,500 nationwide. My chapter has helped raise $850,000 to conserve, restore and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl. A vast majority of these monies have gone into the Chesapeake Bay Restoration program being conducted by Ducks Unlimited. To date, MD DU has helped conserve 52,000 acres in the state and spent almost $10 million in Maryland.

I volunteer at the information desk for Anne Arundel Medical Center, the Kent Island branch. I also assist with sales and fundraising for the local AAUW and Wye River Upper School.

I was fortunate to grow up with parents who volunteered their time at my school and with the local fire department. My father, Jim Del Priore ’64, was a volunteer at Arnold Volunteer Fire Department. Growing up, he relayed many great stories of his time there. This planted a seed within me and, in November of 1990, I joined the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad in Bethesda, MD, as a volunteer. I was a very active member for 10 years. I ran calls as an EMT, drove ambulances and even served on numerous committees and as an officer. Today, I support the squad with web and tech support as well as sit on a few committees. My volunteerism has been rewarding in countless ways, not the least of which is the fact that I met my wife of 18 years volunteering at the squad. I only hope that one day my sons, now 17 and 15, will find a way to contribute to their community.

After retiring from Dupont Engineering in 1991, I began volunteering. I volunteer primarily with the Kershaw County Hospital in Camden, SC. My key job has been installing LIFELINE Home Alert systems for county residents. At the hospital I have helped the Radiology Department reorganize and maintain their files. My volunteer hours with the hospital now exceed 9000.

Since I retired in 1997, I have volunteered at Sotterley Plantation. I started in the garden and became the co-chair of the Garden Guild. I then became an interpreter doing guided tours and, five years ago, I was asked to join the Board of Trustees. Elsewhere in the community, I have volunteered as a University of Maryland extension master gardener.

We remember Dr. Toll as the president who hosted prominent leaders like former President George H. W. Bush or General Colin Powell one day; the next, he would be found surrounded by students in the dining hall, eating a pizza.

Washington College Remembers John Toll

The Washington College community will gather on campus Thursday, September 15 at 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the life of former President John S. Toll, who passed away July 15, 2011. Please join us at the Decker Theatre in the Gibson Center for the Arts for an appreciation of the man whose optimism, kindness and dedication to higher education continue to inspire us all.

At Mrs. Toll's request, gifts to Washington College in honor of Dr. Toll will fund a prize in physics to be awarded to a graduating senior. Memorial gifts can be sent to the Advancement Office, Washington College, 300 Washington Avenue, Chestertown, MD 21620.

Washington College Leaps Ahead In Forbes List of Top Colleges: 95th Among Private Schools

CHESTERTOWN, MD—Washington College climbed a remarkable 113 spots in the annual Forbes list of America’s Top Colleges. The nation’s tenth oldest college, WC was ranked #107 overall among the 650 colleges and universities surveyed, landing at #95 among private colleges and #24 among schools in the South.

The rankings are prepared by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington, D.C. think tank founded by Ohio University economist Richard Vedder. In presenting the list, Forbes described its ranking criteria as “focused on the things that matter the most to students: quality of teaching, great career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt. … We try and evaluate the college purchase as a consumer would: Is it worth spending as much as a quarter of a million dollars for this degree?”

The data used for the list fall into five categories, the most influential (30 percent of the overall ranking) being “Post-Graduate Success.” Success is measured by how much alumni earn and how many are listed in “Who’s Who in America” and on the Forbes Corporate Officers list.

The category of “Student Satisfaction,” which accounts for 27.5 percent of a school’s overall score, considers evaluations from RateMyProfessors.com and the retention rate from freshman to sophomore year. Other categories are student debt, four-year graduation rates, and the number of nationally competitive awards such as Rhodes Scholarships, National Science Foundation Fellowships and Fulbright Awards a school’s alumni earn.

First on the Forbes list for the second year in a row is Williams, followed by Princeton, West Point, Amherst and Stanford. Dr. John S. Toll

To the Washington College community:

July15th, 2011 marked the passing of one of the greatest figures in Washington College history. Dr. John S. Toll, whose presidency of Washington College between 1995 and 2004 capped a remarkable career in higher education spanning five decades, died in his sleep this morning. (Click to read the full obituary.) I know that all of you join me in sending sincerest condolences to his wife Debby, his daughters Caroline and Dacia, and his extended family of friends and colleagues who had the privilege to know and work with him.

Dr. Toll led Washington College through its most productive decade in recent history. All of us are the beneficiaries of what has become known as “The Toll Factor,” which inspired such a strong renewal of confidence and optimism on campus. The momentum sparked by his many accomplishments continues today.

I am deeply grateful for the work of my predecessor and his cheerful determination to leave Washington College better than he found it. He will be remembered for his infinite optimism, his kindness, and his unwavering belief in the special mission of Washington College.

The family is planning to hold a memorial service in September. We will let you know about these details as they become available.

In the whirlwind of our daily jobs, in the course of focusing on metrics and benchmarks to measure our progress, we sometimes forget to focus on what really matters: helping other people. A few days ago, I received the following e-mail from a mother who was visiting Washington College with her two children.

"This past week I visited Washington College with my rising high school senior and her younger brother. We had an ill-fated trip. The day before, while touring schools in DC, I lost my wallet. I could access limited cash through on-line transfer to my kid's debit accounts, so we soldiered on with college visits. While at Washington College, my car broke down. I had no identification, no credit cards and limited cash. I took the cue from my car and broke down.

"As I cried openly under a tree, a Washington College employee immediately approached and asked if I needed help. Within the next 15 minutes we were offered assistance by 4 individuals. We received offers to spend the night in their homes and to front the money for car repairs. Again, I wish I had names. One was a gentleman with campus security, two were staff members (I think) and one a faculty member who teaches a course in global writing. She occupied my daughter with tremendous information about the college.
"With the aid of a local garage, summoned by campus security, we got the car going and were on our way. The generosity of your staff, however, cannot go without comment. I was thrilled today (safe and sound back home in Oxford, Ohio) to be approached by a man whose car was out of gas and debit card not working. I was able to pay for his gas and send him on his way. It was an honor to repay my debt to your folks in some small way.

"I needed to let you know about our experience. We also found the one-on-one college tour to be a terrific experience. The campus is beautiful, the programs appealing, but nothing will stick in our minds as much as the kindness of the people. Please thank them for us."

As you can imagine, this brought a tear to my eye. I could not have been more proud of the quality of individuals at Washington College and the shared sense that each of us plays a vitally important role in the life and reputation of this institution. All of us at the College, and all of our alumni and friends around the country, should be gratified by the care, attention and generosity that were extended to a family while they were so far from home and in need. This is who we are at Washington College. This is why we are extraordinary.

Good News On State Funding Requests

Dear Alumni,

The 428th session of the Maryland General Assembly adjourned at midnight last night, and I am pleased to report that the legislature maintained funding for the Sellinger Program of direct aid to independent colleges and universities at the fiscal 2011 appropriation of $38.4 million. Washington College’s allocation under the Sellinger Program will be $1,364,424. As important, the Fiscal 2012 Capital Budget awards $10 million for four construction and renovation projects at independent colleges and universities. Washington College’s allocation will be $2.5 million for the renovation of the Clifton M. Miller Library. Washington College is contributing the difference to upgrade the heating, air conditioning and ventilation system; to create spaces for group study, distraction-free testing and study skills instruction, an expanded College Archive, and additional offices for instructional technology staff.

Up until this past weekend, there was grave concern that the College’s request for assistance in renovating Miller Library would be reduced to $1.5 million, effectively delaying the opportunity to begin the project this summer. The $2.5 million is less than the requested $3 million, but it will permit the College to begin phase one of the project immediately following Commencement in May. It also means that a planned $1 million renovation of the basement of the Cain Athletic Center will be able to proceed as planned this summer.

There are many individuals to thank for the success of our state funding requests in these trying economic times. First and foremost, we thank the members of the General Assembly who were our champions: Delegates Norman Conway, Adrienne Jones, and Melony Griffith of the House Appropriations Committee and Senators Edward Kasemeyer, James DeGrange, and Richard Colburn of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee. In addition, Senators Barry Glassman ’84 and Joe Getty ’74 were persuasive advocates on behalf of their alma mater. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not recognize and salute Tina Bjarekull, President of the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA), and her staff for their diligent work throughout the 90-day legislative session to make the case for independent higher education before the members of the General Assembly. We could ask for no better representation in the halls of the Maryland legislature than Tina and her staff.

I hope you will join me in thanking members of the Maryland General Assembly with whom you come into contact for supporting MICUA institutions through the Sellinger Formula and the State Capital Budget.

"There's no place like home."

That was certainly the case for our varsity student-athletes this weekend. Saturday marked the first time in school history that nine varsity sports competed at home on the same day - and all nine came away winners. The men's and women's rowing teams hosted Division II Philadelphia University and won five of the six races. The men's tennis team won two matches, while the women's tennis team remained unbeaten at 10-0 with a win over Muhlenberg. Our men's and women's lacrosse teams each posted important conference wins over Muhlenberg. On the diamond, baseball swept a double-header against Ursinus, winning game two in walk-off fashion in the 11th inning, while softball split a pair of games against Muhlenberg, winning game one in walk-off fashion in the 10th. Finally, the sailing team hosted a conference championship-qualifying regatta this weekend and put the finishing touches on its first-place finish Sunday morning. It was a truly remarkable weekend on the fields, on the courts, and on the water and was representative of the continued success our teams are bound to enjoy. There are plenty of games left. The "biggest little lacrosse game in America" is just five weeks away and Washington College alumni are encouraged to cheer on the Shoremen as they do battle against archrival Salisbury University in the "War on the Shore," Saturday, May 7, on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

The best, of course, is in person. The "War on the Shore" has an atmosphere unsurpassed in Division III athletics. The game routinely draws more than 2,000 fans, and Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium will be a packed house - not to mention the hundreds of Washington College students who will be enjoying the game from just outside the north end of the stadium between Sassafras and Chester Halls. There will be a special alumni and friends BYOB pre-game tailgating section set up outside the stadium beginning at 11:00 am. (Note: There will be no skybox seating available during the game due to the television broadcast.)

Watch it on TV If you live in the greater Baltimore media market, you can watch the game live on WMAR-TV, ABC 2. For the first time ever, the "War on the Shore" will be the station's featured Game of the Week.

The 24-Hour DV Challenge

Do you have an interest in Film-making or Digital Video? Would you like to participate in Washington College's 6th annual 24-Hour Digital Video Challenge?

The 24-Hour DV Challenge has been a highly popular video competition, hosted by WC's Multimedia Production Center over the last five years. Participants form a team to create a short film in just one day. The challenge increases with a list of criteria you must include in your video that you won't receive until the start of the competition. Teams must have at least one WC alumna/us on them, and final videos must include only footage produced and edited during the 24-hour window. The winning alumni team earns bragging rights and a $150 Amazon.com gift card.

Competition:
The primary time window is 4/1/11 at 5:30 PM to 4/2/11 at 5:30 PM.
A secondary window of 4/2/11 at 5:30 PM to 4/3/11 at 5:30 PM is available to help those with scheduling conflicts. You must choose one time slot.

Screening and Awards:
A screening of the films and awards for the winning teams will take place 4/11/11 at 7:30 PM in Hodson Hall in the Egg. The best video production will receive the prize of a $150 Amazon.com gift card.

You are not required to come to campus to participate!
As much as we'd love to have our alumni teams producing their films on campus and in the MPC lab, you are not required to travel to campus to participate. If you live too far away to make the trip, please consider forming your team locally and submitting your film electronically (for timestamp) and follow up with a DVD in the mail for the screening. If you do want to come to campus to participate, you can bring your own equipment to use, or borrow gear from us!

Ah! The "all-nighter." It's a Washington College tradition few of us can forget. And on Saturday night of Reunion Weekend we are going to celebrate those memories in a very special show.

We are currently seeking savvy storytellers to relate true stories about their late night escapades in a live performance program called “Tales Out of School: All-Nighters.” If you have a moving, inspiring, shocking, or hilarious story about your College experience after dark, we want to know about it. Was your educational experience between dusk and dawn as valuable as your experience between dawn and dusk? Did coffee, snack foods, hormones, or fear fuel your push through ’til dawn? Did you toil through the night to finish a paper, cram for an exam, celebrate a victory, seek love, overcome heartbreak, share secrets, or support friends?

The Washington College Department of Drama Alumni want to hear from all artful alumni storytellers (regardless of your field of study) about your unforgettable experience in sleep deprivation. If you can tell your story in less than 10 minutes, through words or song, dance or movement, mime or sign, and you are planning to come to Reunion Weekend (May 20-22), please tell us about you and your tale.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: “TALES OUT OF SCHOOL: ALL-NIGHTERS”
All alumni planning to attend Reunion Weekend 2011 in Chestertown are invited to submit a proposal for our “Tales Out of School” program. Please send us a one-page description that includes:

Some basic information about you: class year; field of study; current vocation (or avocation); performance, public speaking, or storytelling experience, etc.
A brief description of your true Washington College “all-nighter” story: who, what, where, when, etc., and how you would tell it.
A brief sales pitch: why do you think your story should be included in the presentation?

Story proposals must be sent via e-mail to reunionstories@washcoll.edu no later than Friday, April 15. Supporting materials (such as headshots or other photos, MP3 video or music clips, etc.) are also welcome.

Storytellers selected for the performance will be notified by a panel of alumni volunteers by May 1. A mentor/director will be assigned to each storyteller to help prepare for the performance. Storytellers will be expected to arrive on campus the afternoon of Friday, May 20, to meet with the group. Storytellers must also attend a brief technical rehearsal on Saturday, May 21. The performance will take place from 7:30-8:30 pm on Saturday.

NOTA BENE: On the night of the performance, audience members who have an all-nighter story to tell will drop their names into a hat for possible selection during the performance. Alumni storytellers whose submissions are not selected by the committee are encouraged to participate in the drawing on the night of the performance.

The Annual Birthday Ball

The Annual George Washington's Birthday Ball, a traditional formal event that invites students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to come together in celebration of George Washington's Birthday, will be held on Saturday, February 26. Doors will open for alumni and visitors at 9 p.m., and the event will run until 12:30 a.m. There are a few surprises planned, so be sure to get there early!

Tickets bought before February 16 may be purchased at the discounted rate of $30. An Evening with the Reisses

At the first of many welcome receptions for President Mitchell B. Reiss and his wife, Elisabeth, held at the Annapolis Yacht Club on July 29, I was fortunate to have the job of escorting the President and First Lady that evening and introducing them to more than 200 guests-our Annapolis, DC and Talbot County alumni, incoming students of the Class of 2014 and their families, and friends of the College.

I admit to being a little nervous at first, thinking, "How should I address him? How should I introduce him? President Reiss? Dr. Reiss? Ambassador Reiss?" There are many titles from which I could choose. He squelched my anxiety immediately when he shook my hand and said, "Call me Mitchell."

Both Mitchell and Elisabeth were approachable, warm and charming. Elisabeth practically danced around the room greeting folks in her cheery British accent, telling them that she was excited about opening Hynson-Ringgold House for the many events they have planned this year. One of Elisabeth's first projects is to re-introduce the "Alma Mater" to the College community. As an opening to the evening's program, Beth Anne Langrell, director of student development, sang the musical tribute to Washington College. I could hear the whispering among the alumni, "I never knew we had a school song." Well, we do, and you can hear the Washington College Consort's rendition here.

President Reiss, too, moved easily around the room. He greeted everyone with the same grace, kindness and interest he had shown me. Mitchell listened to friendly chatter about how pleased they are that he is here, to complaints about past issues, and to suggestions as to how we could do things better. He devoted his evening to learning what matters most to us.

President Reiss also had the opportunity to publicly address the guests. The audience broke into spontaneous applause as he outlined several new initiatives that you'll be hearing more about soon. It was clear to everyone that evening that, just 30 days into his presidency, Mitchell B. Reiss is making strides in raising the profile of Washington College. Washington College is in very good hands. If you have not yet had the pleasure to meet Mitchell and Elisabeth Reiss, I hope you will attend one of the upcoming chapter events we have planned for the year ahead (see "Alumni Events" column at right). New Lacrosse Coach Brings Great Expectations

The Shoremen lacrosse team will have some new faces on the sidelines next season with the hiring of new head coach Jeff Shirk and assistants J.L. Reppert, Andrew Delaney and Ian Shure. The incoming staff brings a wealth of experience and high expectations to a storied program that has struggled in recent years.

"I'm looking forward to getting the guys back on campus, meeting everyone and seeing what we have, how we can help develop these players, and how far we can go this year," Shirk said.

The school's 11th men's head lacrosse coach, Shirk comes to Chestertown after four years as head coach at Division I Virginia Military Institute. A four-year short-stick defensive midfielder at the University of Maryland, Shirk's first coaching job out of college was at the Naval Academy Preparatory School.

Assistant J.L. Reppert, a former player for the Naval Academy and a nine-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, also brings a military background to WC. "The experience of coaching at a military school really helps shape you to be more organized in everything you do within the program and how you run the program," Shirk said. "It's helped me become a better coach."

Without the strict rules that govern life at a military school, Shirk says there will be a greater emphasis on educating players about the right things to do off the field. "I know they're 18-to-22-year-old men who are going to make mistakes, but they will understand that they are a representation of me and of Washington College at all times - over the summer, at night, on the field, over the weekend, in the classroom. It's important that my guys always represent us well," he said.

Shirk plans to raise the expectations for his players, off the field and on. "They're going to be held to a higher standard," he says. "In the short-term, I'm focused on getting back on track right away and developing a mentality among the players of working hard, all the time, at everything we do," he said. "Long-term, I want to get back up to the top five teams in Division III where we're competing for a national championship every year," he said.

To reach those goals, Shirk will rely on the strengths of his assistant coaches. "The staff that came together is an older, experienced staff, which sets us apart from a lot of our competitors," he said. "J.L. was a very good midfielder for Navy, and he's going to bring that offensive mindset. I trust him with developing the offensive side of the field," Shirk said. "Ian is really entwined in the Baltimore recruiting circles from coaching at the high school level, so he'll bring that aspect in addition to working with the offense," he added.

Rounding out the staff, Delaney will work primarily with the defenders. "Drew's been in defensive coordinator positions recently so I expect him to help me there," Shirk said. "I prefer to oversee everything and have guys in place that I can trust."

With his hard work mentality, high standards and will to win, Shirk's the guy Washington College is going to trust to bring its lacrosse program into a new era, and he's been embraced by the college community since he took the job.

"The alumni have been overwhelmingly welcoming," he said. "I've spoken with some of them or exchanged e-mails, and I'm really looking forward to developing those relationships. They're very, very excited about the program, and that makes me excited to be a part of it," Shirk said.

A Reunion Like No Other

These music production team volunteers spent many hours coordinating the alumni musical talent for Reunion 2010.

These are the drama production team volunteers who made the alumni drama and dance production possible.

WC turned the spotlight on its talented alumni this year to create a Reunion like no other! Reunion 2010: Back by Popular Demand brought alumni thespians, dancers, artists, musicians, brewers and poets back to campus to share their talents on the WC stage once again.

There was no shortage of artistic talent on display at Reunion this year. Alumni musicians of all ages performed onstage during the Red Carpet Party at "Andy's Revisited." Jim Graham '81 hosted a photo show of his work in the Miller Library. Erin Murphy '90 performed a reading of her poetry at the Lit House. The new Gibson Center for the Arts served as an outstanding backdrop for the alumni dance and drama production, and Martha Washington Square transformed into a stage for the alumni musicians' showcase.

Fun was had by old and young alike. Professors from days gone by came back to present one more class in Bill Smith. Professor Emeritus Robert Day even distributed a quiz, or rather, his trademark "quizzy-poo" on the ABC's of Enlightenment. Children rode on ponies and slid down inflatable slides while families ate at the All-Campus Picnic. After having a bite to eat, a crowd headed to the Alumni House for a beer tasting hosted by alumni brewers from 16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown, DE.

While some alumni who returned to WC did not come to celebrate a milestone Reunion, there was no shortage of parties for those who were honoring a special year. The classes of 1960 and 1985 celebrated their 50th and 25th Reunions, respectively, and the classes of '05, '00, '95, '90, '80, '75, '70, '65, and the Older and Wiser Society returned for their important reunions as well. Representatives from all classes presented their Reunion class gifts at the dedication of the Livingood Terrace by the Class of 1959.

Washington College thanks all of its alumni volunteers-the Reunion chairs, the Reunion committee members, and all of the production volunteers-for their hard work and enthusiasm in making Reunion 2010 an incredible success! About Your Alumni Board

The Washington Fund Committee
One of the key committees of the Alumni Board is The Washington Fund Committee. Ably led by Linda Ayres '69, this committee works closely with College Advancement staff who oversee The Washington Fund. The primary goals of the committee are to:

improve alumni education about The Washington Fund
increase alumni participation in The Washington Fund
educate alumni about giving options at Washington College. Examples include The Washington Fund, The 1782 Society, the George Washington Society, the Sho'men Club, capital campaigns, etc.
encourage the Alumni Board to set an example for our alumni by supporting The Washington Fund
officially recognize those alumni who give to the Washington Fund

What is The Washington Fund?
The Washington Fund is the first fundraising priority for Washington College every year because it provides dependable, recurring, budgeted support for the College's highest priorities and greatest opportunities. Gifts to The Washington Fund directly and immediately impact our students. Thousands of alumni, parents, and friends choose to support WC through The Washington Fund because it has both immediate and enduring effects.

Gifts made without restriction to The Washington Fund are directed to the most expensive and pressing priorities. Recent history shows these gifts most often support student scholarships. This type of support reaches a wide audience-every single student on campus, to be exact-by offsetting the annual cost of offering a personalized liberal arts education. Your generosity to The Washington Fund will be put to immediate use, addressing real needs and having real impact.

In summation, the goal of the Washington Fund Committee of the Alumni Board is to increase alumni awareness and participation in The Washington Fund. ISO Washington College Veterans

Do you know of Washington College alumni who served in a foreign or domestic war? The Alumni Board's Awards Committee is undertaking a project to recognize Washington College veterans. Currently, we have a list of nearly 135 veterans but we know there are more. We need your help finding those men and women who are an important part of our history and deserve recognition.

Chestertown's 1st Half Marathon

Dear Fellow Alumni,

As you may already know, I started an organization called Athletes Serving Athletes, Inc. (ASA) over two years ago. Our mission is to provide the opportunity for challenged athletes to pursue an active lifestyle through the thrill of athletic competition otherwise inaccessible to them. Specifically, we offer programs and services that inspire, prepare and enable challenged athletes to compete in running, triathlon and cycling events.

I am pleased to share that ASA has made great strides in its first two years and we have teamed up with the Chestertown Town Council, Washington College, Kent County Sheriffs Department, Charm City Run and three local charities (Women in Need Inc. and its after-school programs at “the alley”, Character Counts! Kent County, and The Radcliffe Creek School) to host the Inaugural Chestertown Half Marathon on September 18, 2010, at Wilmer Park in Chestertown.

Please join us, either as runner, spectator, or volunteer, to witness the perseverance and courage that will be on display by amazing athletes who will push the limits of their abilities and show “what is possible.”
